These adorable knit flowers are quick, easy & fun to make. If you have a few spare buttons and some scrap yarn lying around this is the project for you. Set them out individually or gather them in a bouquet.

The idea for these flowers came about when I was trying to figure out how to use up two thing I had seemed to have an incredible abundance of – Yarn and Buttons.

I am always looking for ways to use up all the leftover and partial skeins I have accumulated.  I literally have bins full of wonderful fiber I would hate to go to waste. Leftover from other projects, they aren’t enough for even a hat or fingerless gloves, but I still can’t part with them! The buttons were accumulated when I went through a phase with my knitting where I wanted everything I made to have them. The phase didn’t last long but in that short time I managed to amass quite a collection of them.

If you have ever made the knit or crochet pumpkins in the fall then these knit flowers will feel really similar.  I wanted to create something that could use all weights and sizes of yarn and could easily be adjusted to make larger or smaller.

Notes & Customization:

The pattern uses worsted weight yarn but is easily adaptable to any weight yarn and any size flower you would like. Just use the needle size or one size smaller (you don’t want any gaps for the stuffing to poke out of) than is recommended on the yarn label.
For larger flowers cast on more stitches and for a smaller flower cast on less. When finished the flower measures about one-third of its original height. So if you want your flower to be two inches thick you will need to knit rows until it measure approximately 6 inches tall.

I used Classic Fiber Fill stuffing for this project. I got a really large bag from Michaels for around $11. It can be found at most craft stores. If you don’t have or don’t want to use traditional stuffing you can cut up some of your stash yarn into pieces that measure a few inches or less and use that in its place

Pattern:

Cast on 37 stitches and join in the round.

Knit 14 rows

Cut a tail at least 18 inches long

Using a Darning needle slide all the  stitches on the needle and pull tight to close up the hole.

Place stuffing (or cut up stash yarn) into the “pouch” you have created until it is about half full.

Place your needle up through the bottom hole to the top set of stitches.
Pick up all the stitches around and pull halfway closed.
Place more stuffing in until the pouch is full – being sure to evenly spread the stuffing around.  Pull tight to close up the hole.

*Don’t be alarmed if there is a little puckering or it doesn’t look as neat. That area will be covered with the button*

Take the yarn around and back up through the middle 4 times creating four equal sections that will be the “petals” keeping a good tension as you go.

Knot and weave in the ends.

Take the button of your choice and a smaller sewing needle (one that will fit the holes of the button you chose) and sew it into the center of your flower.

Enjoy! ❤
