I am a gift card giver.
I wish I was that type of person who could remember the time 6 months ago when you picked something up in a store and said you liked it.  I know people like this and they amaze me. More often than not I resort to the gift card and hope the receiver is maybe a little impressed that i remembered their favorite store.

That doesn’t mean I don’t care or that I don’t want a gift (even a gift card) to be as special as possible. One way to make these little pieces of plastic more personal – Knit a fun little holder for it!

Cream and Magenta knit gift card holder with hearts

These adorable holders are a quick knit that can also be great for stash busting. Stock pile them for the holidays or anytime you are in a crunch (ie. forget).

For this pattern I used a newer yarn called teenie weenie – Mostly because i was dying to make something out of these adorable little skeins.  They come in 34 colors and i wanted them all! The yarn is a fine weight so i actually held two strands together to give it a little more thickness. It created a sport weight yarn – so any sport weight yarn will also work.  The holders would also make a great stash buster project. One skein each of two colors (43yds each) made two holders with a little bit of yarn to spare. I am going to hold onto these extras and create a few really colorful holders.

Note: If you choose to use the Teenie Weenie wool or any other fine weight yarn make sure to hold two strands together to knit. If using a sport weight yarn only use a single strand.

Bind off and sew in all loose ends

Fold the piece in half so the two rib sections are at the top and the hearts are on the outside.
Sew up the sides with a few whip stitches and fill those lovely holders with gift cards!

Notes:

  • Every row begins by slipping one stitch purl wise and ends with a Knit stitch.  This keeps the edges neat and straight and allows for easier sewing up of the side.
  •  Use whatever method you are comfortable with to sew the sides up.  I used a whip stitch just for the looks but feel free to use whatever method you like.
  • When knitting with the contrasting color be sure to wrap the original and contrasting strands around each other to avoid any gaps
